Our Philosophy and Approach to Learning
At Little Friends Treehouse, quality relationships are embedded across all aspects of our practice. We view children as capable, confident and curious learners who are entitled to respect, dignity and equitable opportunities. We honour the cultural diversity of our community and actively promote children’s understanding of difference, including the histories, perspectives and ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Play-based learning is central to our philosophy and pedagogy. Through play, children are empowered to explore, question, create and make meaning of the world around them. Guided by our belief in Play, Learn, Discover Together, educators intentionally design experiences that emerge from children’s interests, strengths and ideas, allowing learning to unfold naturally through hands-on, meaningful engagement.
Nature is a vital context for learning at Little Friends Treehouse. We believe the natural environment is a powerful educator, offering rich opportunities for discovery, problem-solving, risk-taking and connection. Children are encouraged to engage with outdoor spaces daily, developing respect for the natural world while strengthening their physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Educators intentionally use the environment to provoke thinking, invite curiosity and support deep, sustained learning.
Our practice is also informed by the 8 Ways of Learning, which guide us to value storytelling, learning through land, non-linear thinking, collaboration, visual learning and shared responsibility. These ways of knowing support children to learn through connection — to people, place, culture and community — allowing each child to engage in learning in ways that are meaningful to them.
